IN OCTOBER 2007, TYPHOON LEKIMA ripped through Vietnam, blowing roofs off of houses, sinking boats, grounding flights, and raising rivers to dangerous heights. Two people were killed and hundreds of homes destroyed in one of the country's poorest regions along the central coast of Vietnam.
One of those families was Mr. and Mrs. Le Van Lanh, a deacon at Khanh Binh Evangelical Church in Quang Nam Province.
Since then, Mr. Lanhs family his wife, four young children, and elderly mother have been homeless and forced to live in a tent.
It was people like the Lanh family that FEBC hoped to help when they distributed their very first gift catalog in September 2007. Items in the catalog include such things as: -
Radios to help people living in remote areas hear the Good News of Jesus
-
Motorcycles to help itinerant pastors in Southeast Asia travel from village to village to share the message of Christ
-
Airtime for Muslim nations to provide one hour of Christian programming for listeners searching for answers
-
New homes to offer shelter for those who lost their homes in recent typhoons in Vietnam
In November 2007, FEBC received a phone call from a donor who received our Gift Catalog. After studying it carefully, she decided to donate the full amount of $1,000 to re-build a simple home for a Vietnamese family. And since Christmas was right around the corner, she asked FEBC to send her gift cards she could give to her family to let them know she had donated the house on their behalf. Her gift to FEBC and the Lanh family would be in honor of the special people in her life.
Here at FEBC we were thrilled, but no one was happier than the Lanh family, who were recently notified of the gift and look forward to having a well-built home to move into this year.
