| A FORMER COMMUNIST PARTY MEMBER in China recently wrote to FEBC. While serving the communist party he'd been exposed to the gospel and later became a believer. After he retired, he became a traveling evangelist.
In his letter talked he talked about one particular trip in China when he came upon an isolated village of 100 residents. With no roads in or out, the evangelist was sure he’d found “virgin territory” to share the Good News. He struck up a conversation with a man and soon launched into the story of the creator God and Jesus.
He hadn’t been talking long when the villager said, "We know about Jesus. We have a radio and we’ve been listening to Christian broadcasts for a long time. We even have a church with 35 members."
The evangelist finished his letter by saying, “Thank you for your broadcasts and the work that God is doing through your ministry. I must confess I didn’t think God could build a church through a radio, but clearly He can!” Blessing the Remote
God also uses FEBC to reach people who might never hear about Jesus or struggle to grow in their faith, such as this man who wrote:
"My wife and I live deep in the forest and rely on the Lord for everything. Over the past two years, we’ve been unable to walk the many miles to church; instead we’ve been tuning in to FEBC for spiritual nourishment. With no electricity, we rely on our portable sets to strengthen ourselves in the Lord."
Strengthening the Persecuted
In many parts of China, it's dangerous to be a Christian, and many are persecuted for their faith. Not long ago FEBC-China received word that Christian workers in a remote province had been forced to leave the country after many years of service. Those who remained were thrown in jail. Believers in the region now fear for their lives.
One of the expelled missionaries recently met with an FEBC staff member, who asked about the effectiveness of Christian radio in the area. "It’s very successful," he said. “And now that Christian workers have been forced out, it’s even more vital! Literacy in this region is low, so radio is often the only means to reach the lost." "It’s very important the broadcasts continue, because it’s the only way they’re going to learn about God. Christians are multiplying in an amazing way in spite of persecution."
Impacting Ethnic Groups
While most of FEBC’s broadcasts into China are in Mandarin, millions of Chinese speak other languages. This is why we're renewing efforts to add programs in five more languages for a potential audience of almost 50 million "least reached" people with the Good News of Jesus. These programs are broadcast 30 minutes a day year-round.
While listener response to these broadcasts is minimal - many listeners are illiterate - missionary reports indicate the programs are well received. A year ago we heard from this listener in southern China:
"My tribe has always believed in ancestral spirits. But since I've started listening to your programs, I seem to be thinking differently. I visited your Web site and read the articles about Jesus and salvation. I listen to your broadcasts over the Internet, but I still fail to get a firm grasp. I hope you’ll help me know the Lord and get near Him so I can feel His presence."
We praise God for letters like this, because they show how He is using the broadcasts to change hearts and lives... even transforming those steeped in animism and ancestor worship their entire lives.
