IN RESPONSE TO THE estimated 5 million people left homeless by the May 12 earthquake in China, FEBC Chinese Programming has been working hard to offer relief and hope to survivors. "According to our staff members in Hong Kong, there is more
spiritual openness as a result of this tragedy," says Gregg Harris, president of FEBC. "People
are questioning many things after this disaster, and are seeking answers to the deeper
questions of life." Hoping to offer comfort and hope, FEBC Chinese Programming's efforts include:
Distributing 20,000 Portable RadiosRadios give survivors a lifeline to emergency and health information and spiritual encouragement. FEBC is committed to giving 20,000 radios to earthquake victims. More than 1,200 have already been given.
Creating Special ProgramsShortly after the disaster FEBC began airing a disease prevention and control program hosted by an experienced medical doctor. Another new program, Rekindle Your Heart, is a daily 30-minute broadcast that will soon be on the air. The program is designed to deeply encourage and restore listeners, and includes live interviews with earthquake victims.
Giving Support and ReliefWhen FEBC Chinese Programming staff visited listeners affected by the earthquake, they learned that some churches had not received relief from the government. They are now giving support directly to those churches and partnering with two local medical and relief organizations.
Addressing Emotional NeedsFEBC Chinese Programming has created a special CD with content on Post Traumatic Stress and related topics. The CDs are being distributed in Sichuan Province.
