August 2003

We officially began the rebuilding project. Kalevi Marin, an engineer and contractor from Finland, donated his time to oversee the first phase of the project. We broke ground for the new building and installed the main drainage pipes and three layers of waterproofing. But winter arrived earlier than expected and the ground began to freeze in November, forcing us to postpone the work until spring.

April 2004
In April Kalevi returned to Mongolia with Seppo Siren. In preparation for construction, we set up rebar nets to be used for the floors. To prevent the foundation from cracking due to Mongolia’s harsh winters, Seppo decided to install a heating system around the foundation—an innovation that has probably never been used in Mongolia.
November 2004
The main shell for the building – from the basement to the 3rd floor - has been completed. Windows and doors will arrive from Finland next spring. The wall of the third floor will also be laid next spring, followed by a rounded attic and roofing.
