AS A TEMPLE PRIEST AND VILLAGE LEADER I was very troubled when I heard a Christian missionary had entered my village in Indonesia, distributing literature and talking to my people. I was especially upset when one of my villagers declared himself a Christian. Others soon expressed interest in this foreign faith. "What is the secret power of this teaching," I wondered. I decided to send two of my sons to a Christian school to uncover the mystery. But after a short time at the school, they both chose to follow the Christian way and were later baptized. I was deeply ashamed.
When my Christian sons grew up, they felt a strong desire to share their faith with our extended family. They treated our relatives who practiced another faith with good will and respect. When my father had a stroke, my sons, who had become doctors, ministered to him both medically and spiritually. They even told him how to become a Christian, which he did, though he had once been a temple priest himself. I was amazed! Truly Christianity had great power.
Finding Truth in FEBC BroadcastsFor over a year I meditated on these things. I began listening to FEBC’s broadcasts, especially a program called Sharing and Prayer. Although I wanted to disprove the Christian faith, I was forced to conclude that Jesus is the way of salvation, and that the Word of God is the source of joy in life. I resigned all my positions of leadership in the village and was baptized in 1989. Now I pastor a church in the village where I was once a temple priest! People bring their sick relatives to me and I pray for them, which allows me to share Jesus with their entire family. I’ve never experienced as much peace as I’ve had since my baptism into the Christian faith.
I am now a spiritual counselor for churches and individuals who desire to grow in Christ. With the help of friends and members of my congregation, I’ve founded a center that treats people with mental problems and drug addictions, as well as a clinic to treat various diseases. I’m also helping my village become self-sufficient by planting crops and raising pigs, thanks to FEBC-Indonesia, who helped us get started in this venture. The funds raised from these farming projects support our rehabilitation center.
This is one example of the influence of FEBC’s broadcasts. God’s Word changed the heart of someone looking to contradict the gospel, transforming him into a faithful follower of Christ. Since his conversion, this pastor has led more than 100 people to the Lord!
